ELGIN, OREGON__Rumor has it, the train robbers are at it again, planning a heist on the Eagle Cap Excursion Train during its next trip, Saturday, June 15; just in time for Father’s Day. A notorious gang of bandits associated with the Elgin Stampeders robs the train near Elgin about this time every year, leaving passengers in stitches and outlaws on the loose. The robbery takes place while the train is passing through a remote section of the Grande Ronde River. Departing Sunday, May 12, from the Elgin depot at 10 a.m., this trip is the only opportunity each year to see the hidden Grande Ronde and lower Wallowa River canyons dressed in spring greens and wild flowers. New Train Depot Ready to Serve Passengers

Passengers on the Eagle Cap Excursion Train will enjoy the new Elgin Depot. Completed in 2012, the depot has ample space for the gift shop, ticket office and waiting area and spacious, fully accessible rest rooms. Exhibits about the Wallowa Union Railroad and the historic Joseph Branch will be installed in the lobby later in the summer. A paved parking lot and bus parking area are also major upgrades to the operation. There are even bike racks for securing your bike while you are riding the train.
